Understanding the Eight Different Types of Brakes

Brakes are one of the most important components of a vehicle. If they are faulty, it becomes almost impossible to control the car. In fact, their failure is one of the leading causes of road accidents. Here is a breakdown of the eight most common systems used by car manufacturing companies.

Disc Systems

Disc brakes have a friction mechanism designed to reduce the speed at which the wheels rotate. They push the brake pads against the brake rotors using a set of calipers.

Single Circuit Hydraulics

A single circuit hydraulic system includes a master cylinder that holds hydraulic fluid. The cylinder is linked to a series of rubber fittings and metal pipes that are fixed on the wheel cylinders. To bring the car to a halt, pressure is generated in the cylinder to push the pistons apart and force the brake pads into the wheel cylinder.

Drum Mechanism

The drum mechanism relies on friction force. This system has a set of pads that press against the drum when the driver steps on the brake pedal.

Anti-lock System (ABS)

The anti-lock system is comprised of a hydraulic actuator, electrical control unit, and wheel speed sensors. Each wheel is controlled separately to maintain traction. The primary function of the sensors is to detect and prevent potential lockups.

Power Booster Mechanism

A power booster mechanism uses the vacuum power produced by the car's engine to amplify the driver's foot pressure when stopping the vehicle.

Air Mechanism

Air systems activate the standard disc using natural air instead of hydraulic fluid. It is widely employed in trailers, trucks, and buses.

Advanced Emergency Mechanism (AEBS)

The advanced emergency system is an autonomous safety mechanism that uses sensors to monitor a vehicle's proximity to others in the vicinity. If the sensor detects cars ahead, it automatically stops the car to avoid a collision.

Dual Circuit Hydraulic System

The dual circuit hydraulic system is made up of two command circuits. The first one is activated whenever the driver steps on the pedal. The second one is connected to the vehicle's computer; it calculates the amount of force applied and relays that information to the hydraulic pump.

Here are two tips for maintaining the efficiency and durability of the braking system.

1. Change Fluid Regularly

Over time, the system's fluid naturally attracts water, which leads to internal corrosion that compromises the rubber seals and other components. Flushing the system's fluid regularly helps to enhance the durability and efficiency of the internal components.

2. Master the Art of Coasting

Coasting is a way of reducing speed without causing wear. If a driver wants to stop at the end of a freeway off-ramp, coasting from 70mph to 50mph before stepping on the pedal will reduce wear and enhance the system's efficiency.

Finally, a professional auto facility can run diagnostic tests on the brakes to identify flaws and address them before disaster strikes. During this inspection, request that the mechanic checks the thickness of the disc pads to know if they should be replaced with new ones.

4 Questions to Ask Your Car Repair Specialist

When seeing a car repair specialist about detailing, adjustments, or reconstruction for your vehicle, it is important to communicate openly. By asking a lot of questions in the initial steps of the process, you will be saving yourself time, money, and peace of mind. In order to get the most out of your maintenance, ask your mechanic these questions:

Do You Provide Written Estimates?

In some states, but not all, a written estimate is required by law. It will include the labor and maintenance the shop owner thinks your automobile most likely needs. When receiving the estimate, you can also decide what should be done if there is unforeseen or hidden damage. Most people opt to be called or otherwise contacted so they can decide when and how to address these damages.

What's Causing This Problem?

Online diagnostic sites and tests are great tools to use for minor problems. But, for more complicated issues that affect multiple systems in an engine, there are too many variables in each make and model to get a clear picture of the problem with a diagnostic tool. Auto specialists have extensive experience with all of the clanks and clangs that come out of the engine; they will be able to tell what is wrong with your unit utilizing their own knowledge and comprehensive testing. Going to a mechanic with a specific diagnostic can steer them to overlook or ignore other symptoms in the vehicle.

What Kind of Parts Will You Use?

There are three types of parts a car repair specialist can use while fixing your car: name-brand, aftermarket, and used. Name-brand parts come from the company that produced your car. Aftermarket parts are made by a different company. Used parts can be name-brand or after-market, but they have previously been outfitted on another vehicle. They are still safe and reliable to be used on yours. Name-brand is usually preferred, however, after-market or used units can save you money. Your mechanic can help you decide which will work for you per your needs and budget.

What Repairs Do I Have Coming Up?

While a mechanic is not able to predict future complications, yours should be able to give you an overview of the potential maintenance your vehicle may need in the coming months. Improvements like new tires, changed filters, replaced hoses, engine flushes, etc., need to happen at certain intervals according to the make and model to ensure that your vehicle continues running. Getting this information from your mechanic will help you prioritize improvements to your vehicle. Communicating with your car repair specialist will help you make informed decisions with regards to your automobile.

While these are all good questions to ask of a car repair specialist, nothing beats developing a relationship with a mechanic that you trust. They will be able to recommend the alignments, changes, and upkeep you need while providing quality care. This will help keep your automobile performing in the best possible shape for years to come.

Kid-Safe Vehicle Inspection for Back-To-School Car Pools

Now that back-to-school season is here, parents and guardians are focusing on getting their kids to class safely and on-time. For those involved in neighborhood car pools, it means making sure your vehicles are in top-notch condition so they are capable of providing safe and reliable travel for passengers.
A simple vehicle inspection is a great way to ensure your vehicle is ready for back-to-school season. Locating, correcting, and preventing vehicular problems will make car-pooling safe and efficient for everyone! Continue reading to review a recommended checklist to use for a car pool vehicle safety inspection.
Automotive Safety Inspection Checklist:
1. Prepare for Inclement Weather
It is important to make sure your vehicle is ready to take on rain, hail, snow, fog, and ice. So start by inspecting your interior and exterior lights. In the case of heavy fog or rain (or late night after-school pickups), dim lights are serious safety hazards, so bulbs should be replaced with newer, brighter ones.
Next, check your windshield wiper blades and level of wiper fluid. Be sure to check both front and back windshield wipers for wear and tear. Replace them if needed. Fill up your wiper fluid and keep an extra bottle in the trunk for emergencies.
Last, check your tires for proper tread and tire pressure. Low tread on tires is a safety concern because it reduces traction on slippery surfaces. Use the penny test to check tire tread. Insert a penny in the groove of your tire. If you can see Lincoln's head, it means your tread is low. Check tire pressure with a tire pressure gauge. They are inexpensive and easy to find. Match the reading with the recommended tire pressure in your owners' manual. Be sure to have your tires replaced if the tread is gone, or inflated if they are low on pressure.
2. Check Seatbelts and Car Seats
Be sure to give a good inspection to all of the seatbelts and buckles in your vehicle. Check for belt frays, broken buckles, jammed receptacles, missing or broken hinges and latches, and receptacles stuffed inside seats. Next, check your car seats and boosters for damage or missing components. Be sure they are fully locked into place.
3. Professional Brake Service
Your car brakes are a major safety component in your vehicle. They should be inspected and serviced by a licensed mechanic at least once per year. They retain the proper tools, training, and knowledge to provide a comprehensive inspection of your vehicle and determine if it's safe to drive, as well as, locate small issues early on and prevent them from becoming large, costly repairs or safety hazards later on. You will feel confident transporting precious cargo to and from school when you know your vehicle has been professionally inspected and serviced.

Tips for Knowing It's Time for an Oil Change

Delaying routine vehicle maintenance can lead to expensive repairs. A discerning eye should enable you to notice signs that will tell you when it's time for an oil change.
Appearance
Brand new oil has a caramel color when you first pour it into the reservoir. The color will change gradually over the miles and weeks that elapse. When the lubricant begins to look black in color and you see small particles mixed into it, it's time for an oil change.
Sounds
Oil is crucial for engine lubrication. Without this lubricant present and doing its job, engine parts will begin to grind on each other. This friction will produce noises that you will be able to hear when the engine is running. You might hear a knocking sound. Some people also hear a growling or rumbling sound that continues to build as time goes on.
Dashboard Lights
When the dashboard begins to illuminate with warning lights, it's time to take steps to resolve these issues. Depending on the age of the vehicle, you might see the check engine light or another gauge that illuminates to tell you that something is amiss with the lubricant.
Diminished Levels
A car consumes lubricant as is runs. Gradually, the oil level will fall. This occurs because the lubricant is not working effectively, so the car uses more of it to ensure smooth operation. Low levels of lubricant indicate that's it's time to change it. Do not just pour more lubricant to restore the engine to the recommended level.
Exhaust Smoke
Cold temperatures cause vapors to exit the system through the tailpipe. However, anytime you see actual smoke exiting the tailpipe, this indicates a problem. An oil change would be an easy fix. More difficult solutions could require work to the head gasket or a cylinder.
Mileage
Most manufacturers recommend an oil change every 3,000 miles. Although controversy abounds regarding this mileage recommendation, it's important to set a regular schedule for this maintenance. Even if the lubricant still looks clean at 3,000 miles, it's beneficial to change it on a regular schedule.
Skipping oil changes can result in serious issues. Without this lubrication, parts will rub on other parts. This friction can cause the vehicle to overheat. Left unresolved, overheating can even lead to the melding of parts to each other. A clean filter also provides the important service of filtering dirt away from the engine where it could cause damage. Without this regular maintenance, car parts will wear prematurely. The worst case scenario would be total engine failure.
This type of maintenance is probably one of the easiest things for owners to perform themselves. If you don't want to do the work yourself, a mechanic can take care of it for you in just a few minutes.
