Common Car Problems

Cars are great machines to have. The unfortunate thing is that they tend to develop problems every now and then. Here are some of the most common car problems:

Squeaky Brakes

It's common for car brakes to produce a squealing sound that results from the vibration of pads and rotors. The sound is also produced when the pads and callipers vibrate. If your car has this problem you should ask a professional mechanic to help you in fixing it.

Car Pulls To One Side

If you notice that your car keeps on veering off when you let your hands off the steering wheel or when you aren't physically controlling the steering, the car has a wheel alignment problem. The good thing is that there are many wheel realignment centres and all you need to do is to find one that is nearest your area of residence.

Rough Ride

Are you used to a smooth ride and then your car becomes rough when you are travelling on a rough road? You should take a look at the shock absorbers and struts. Sometimes you can easily repair the problem, but if the problem has lasted for a long time, you should consider replacing the shocks and struts with new ones.

Engine Fails To Crank

There are many reasons that can prevent the engine from cranking: if the engine tries to start, but it doesn't crank successfully, the problem is most likely due to a bad starter. If you turn the key and nothing starts even the lights, the problem may be due to a bad battery. If you are able to start the car, but it quickly stalls, you may need to refuel the car.

Engine Light Comes On And Off

It's common for the engine light to come on and fails to go off. This happens when the car's computer has detected a problem with the emission system. You should consult a professional who will determine the failure.

Engine Knock

An engine knock is brought about by many factors such as too much clearance between the components that are located in the valve train. Unless you have very advanced mechanic skills, you shouldn't try to rectify this problem-you should look for a professional to do the work for you.

Conclusion

These are some of the most common car problems. If your car has a problem you should ensure that a professional rectifies it.

The Importance of Having an Oil Change

Keeping your car in top working order requires regular maintenance. No maintenance is more common than an oil change.

Why Get Have Your Car Serviced

The main reason for an oil change is to help keep the engine running smooth. The liquid acts as a lubricant on the entire engine's moving parts. As the lubricant gets used, contaminants build up inside the liquid. This sludge makes it more difficult for parts of the engine to move freely. As this occurs, you may feel that your car is not running properly. The engine may start cutting out or stop working completely due to overheating. If the parts have to work harder to move, the engine is going to heat up even more.

Conventional vs Synthetic

There are a couple of different types that can be used in your engine. You can choose what is known as conventional, and it is usually the cheapest. This version will help reduce the build-up of contaminants in the engine itself, as well as reduce friction on parts. It is created through a distillation of crude oil. Before you decide on a type, you should make sure that you check your car's owner's manual to make sure the right weight and version is used.

The Process

An oil change is a simple process. The technician gets under the car, removes the pan (on some models) and plug, and allows the liquid to drain from the car. Once it is empty, he or she reinstalls the plug and pan (if applicable), and then refills the engine with fresh, clean lubricant. In addition, the filter should be changed in order to keep your car running smoothly. The filter helps collect some of that sludge and keep the substance cleaner longer.

While many people choose to do this task themselves, by going to a professional, you are certain that all seals are tight and that the proper type is used. This is the benefit of not having to dispose of the old substance yourself.

There is a lot of debate on how often to have an oil change. Lube shops and most manufacturers suggest every 3,000 miles or every 3 months. Some professionals suggest every 5,000 miles with no minimum length of time. If you read the label on some synthetic bottles, they suggest every 10,000 miles. If you are uncertain, have your oil changed every 3,000 to 5,000 for best performance results.

Always check your levels between oil changes. This will not only indicate how dirty the system is getting, as the easier it is to read the dirtier it is, but doing so will also inform you of leaks. You should not lose much of the overall lube in between services. If you have to refill your engine before your next change, then there is a leak somewhere, and you need to have it checked.

How To Maintain Your Car Transmission

An annual checklist in the maintenance of a car's health is the car's transmission maintenance. This is very important to ensure the proper functioning of the vehicle. The transmission decides a number of things; the power transfer from engine to wheels of the car is the most important one. A little bit of research in the matter can help you to easily perform this check annually.

*You already may have a copy of the manual that gives you the exact method of car transmission maintenance for your particular vehicle. If you do not have said copy, you can easily access this information on the Internet.

*Make sure that you pay special attention to your particular model and make, as many automakers often group all their similar vehicles under one category.

*Next thing you can do is drive the car for at least 20 minutes. This helps heat up the engine fluids. You can now park the vehicle and leave the engine on. Next, open the hood of the car, and if needed, prop the hood with the support. Now, look for a ring labeled 'transmission'. Pull this gently and also pull out the fluid dipstick thoroughly wiping it clean. You may protect your hands with gloves and also wear coveralls to protect the clothes while doing this step.

*To check the fluid levels, re-insert the clean dipstick in the reservoir and again pull it out. This can indicate whether more transmission fluid is required. The transmission fluid reservoir is generally located at top left side of the engine and you can change this fluid with the help of a trained mechanic. Transmission fluid change may also be necessary if there is a burning smell or if the fluid has turned darker in color. The actual color of the transmission fluid is a clear red.

*You should always use the car odometer readings to indicate when the vehicle's servicing is due. A general rule of thumb is 24000 miles or every once a year. If the manufacturer has recommended specific dates for servicing, it is best to follow them.

*Always pay attention to the manual transmission and how the clutch is functioning. The sound and feel while changing gears are also important indications of potential problems. If these signs appear, immediately schedule a visit to your auto repair shop.

*Avoid driving in extreme heat. Also, heavy traffic, towing and hard shifting can overheat the transmission.

*The emergency brake should never be applied while the car is in drive or reverse, as this can stress the gears. Also, one must never shift immediately from reverse to drive modes, but allow the gears to reset completely before driving.

Basic Car Care Tips For Safety And Performance

Almost everyone can appreciate a beautifully maintained, classic sports car. Now picture in your mind the same car as a useless vehicle due to negligence of simple auto care, let's say because the owner ignored to check fluid levels and did not add oil to the engine. Not following some basic car care tips can equal the end of the engine for an automobile and the end of the story for a vehicle. What has become a major expense that may exceed the value of the vehicle, would have been a relatively low cost expenditure.

The automobile owner who is not well versed towards essential car care can refer to their owner's manual to find the best maintenance plan for their specific vehicle, but there are general car care tips that apply to all vehicles. If you do not care for your vehicle it will fail to operate properly or worse, as in our classic sports car story above.

For those who care about maintaining a smooth running, safe car, these tips are for you:

1. Check the oil filter and oil levels at least every 3,000 miles.

2. Your auto has various other fluid levels that need to be check on a regular basis. Again, at least every 3,000 miles, the fluid levels for the brakes, power steering, transmission, radiator coolant and windshield wiper fluids should be included.

3. A regular check on all hoses and belts should be done and replaced as they are showing cracks or are frayed.

4. Brake maintenance is often neglected without realizing it. Not all brakes make loud noises when they are in need of maintenance. You should check the brake system about every six months.

5. Testing of the car battery should be done three years from purchase for a new car, and every three years for older vehicles. Battery condition and connections should be checked to make sure there is no excess corrosion and the battery is secure.

6. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks. If there are leaks, repairs are needed as they can be deadly to those in the car.

7. For a properly running engine, auto tune-ups are essential.

8. The car's heating and air conditioning should be checked yearly for proper functionality.

9. Check and replace lights and washer blades as they burn out or wear out.

10. Check tie rods, struts, and ball joints at least twice a year.

11. Maintain proper air level in tires and apply new tires as needed or when tread becomes no less than 2/32 of an inch (for normal driving conditions, or 4/32 of an inch if you are concerned about wet roads).

12. Rotate tires about every 5,000 miles.

Everyone should follow these basic car care tips to assure safety and car performance. To find auto maintenance tips that are specific to your car, remember to refer to your automobile's manual.

Simple Car Maintenance Tips That Will Keep Your Car Running Properly

If you want to ruin your day, never take the time to property maintain your car's engine. This is a sure fire way to have your car breakdown in the most remote of areas. Instead of tempting fate, why not learn how to keep your car well maintained and working properly.

Check your oil levels every week. Engines run at extremely high temperatures and some models will burn through oil at an alarming rate. You do not want to run dry on oil. This will damage the engine to cease. Once this has happened, you either need a new engine or a new car. Both of these issues are extremely costly. Can you afford to be without your car for a lengthy amount of time?

Change your oil every 3,000 miles. After driving for a certain amount of time, oil becomes dirty and sluggish. Keeping the oil changed regularly reduces dirt circulating in the engine.

Another troublesome issue is the belts. With every oil change, you should have the fan belts and air hoses checked for wear and tear.

Antifreeze should be changed every year. Have a professional flush out the cooling system and replace the tanks with new coolant. This can keep a radiator from developing leaks.

Transmission fluid should be checked regularly. The fluid should be changed every 36,000 miles. If the head gasket leaks, your coolant will leak into the oil system. This is an extremely costly repair, so have them checked regularly to prevent this issue. Always stop first before shifting into drive.

Look regularly in your driveway for leaks. If you spot any, take not of the color of the fluid and then take the car in for servicing. Transmission fluid is pinkish, antifreeze is green, oil is golden brown, and brake fluid is reddish. Knowing which fluid is leaking can help a garage determine the severity of your problem. They can fit you into a busy schedule if the leak is potentially hazardous.

To keep your air conditioning system working properly, run the system every month, even in the winter. The same is true with the heating system. It should be run in the summer to prevent any seizing.

Try to brake in advance. Sudden stops wear down brake pads far more quickly. Have your brakes checked regularly for wear and tear.

Tires should be rotated every 7,000 miles. Inspect them visually every month for tire wear, punctures, and bulges.

Pay attention to your battery. If you see white deposits forming on the terminals, clean them with a wire brush and then clean the battery with a mixture of baking soda and water.

Keep your car rust free by keeping it waxed once per season. Have the undercarriage washed at least twice a year.

Use WD40 to keep door hinges well lubricated. This keeps doors opening and closing properly.

Follow your car manual's recommended maintenance schedule. This guarantees the warranty will cover costly repairs, but also prevents unexpected breakdowns.

All it takes is a few simple checks every month, and you can protect yourself from breaking down in an unfamiliar or remote area. Your safety is that important isn't it?
