Why Muscle Cars Captured American Hearts

The history of true muscle cars was short unfortunately, but these cars made such an impression on the public, that they are even more popular today than 40 years ago. Even though muscle car era spanned only for about ten years, it left a huge impact in the automobile history and they are eagerly sought after by serious car collectors from around the world.

By definition, a true muscle car was built from 1965 to 1973, has a large V6 or V8 engine, and a medium sized chassis. These cars had a distinctive look: sharp, aggressive and masculine. Most muscle cars were created wide and low and were not always the best handling vehicles. Not only did they look good, but they were extremely fast and powerful. Within this short period of time, there was a war going on between the major manufacturers to create the fastest and meanest muscle car in the country, and many times these wars were carried out onto the drag strip as well.

A few years after World War II, thousands and thousands of soldiers returned to their home countries and thus the Baby Boom Generation was born. Cars were typically cheap and were neither fast nor attractive. Cars were merely a utility tool and not intended for recreational purposes.

This all changed in 1964, when Pontiac introduced the GTO package with the Tempest which came with a V8 engine. Not only was this vehicle fast and powerful, but Pontiac wanted to make it affordable as well, for the common man. The GTO package spawned its own line and soon became the benchmark car in the industry.

Ford introduced its own muscle model in 1965, the Mustang, and in less than two years sold more than 1.5 million models! In the later years heavier cars made their appearance, such as the Plymouth Road Runner and Super Bee, but were not as popular as the legendary GTO.

The end for these cars came in the mid 70s as insurance companies were raising their premiums on these cars, due to the amount of accidents people were having in these unusually fast vehicles. The gas crisis also forced people to move away from muscle cars, as they were extreme gas guzzlers.

Although the era ended decades ago, these cars are still highly prized and loved. The value of these classics will only continue to rise in the future and investing in one is as sound a financial decision as you can make today.

Cooling System Maintenance Makes the Difference

Although our cars have improved a lot over the years, they still have the tough job of turning chemical energy into mechanical power to help us cruise our highways and byways. Since most of the energy in the gasoline is converted into heat, the cooling system has the tough job to cool it off quickly and efficiently.

Cooling System - "The Heart of Your Vehicle"

You can think of your cars cooling system as the heart of a vehicle. The water pump circulates vital fluid, car coolant / antifreeze, through the engine's radiator and the primary job a car's cooling system is to "regulate" or keep the engine from overheating by transferring this heat to the air. The cooling system also has several other important jobs, such as allowing the engine to heat up as quickly as possible, and then keeping the engine at a constant temperature. Unlike the human body, your car does not reproduce new car coolant to keep it running optimally. A regularly scheduled car coolant flush and fill is critical to maintain your cooling system and the overall health of your vehicle.

Watch for Obvious Warning Signs

Keeping your car's cooling system maintained and functioning properly with a flush and fill can save you from potentially harmful and expensive damage. Understanding the warning signs of cooling system problems and practicing proper maintenance, can help you extend the life of your vehicle. It's important to note that during a car's normal operation, car coolant doesn't just get used up; so, if your car's coolant level is consistently low, your car most likely has a coolant leak. An ASE certified mechanic can conduct a coolant pressure test to verify if you have a leaking radiator.

Here are some additional obvious cooling system problems and warning signs to be aware of:
• Antifreeze / car coolant drain beneath your vehicle
• Temperature gauge is higher than normal or warning light on the dashboard
• Overheating engine - steam from beneath the hood or near your coolant reservoir
• Antifreeze / car coolant on the floor of the passenger compartment
• Poor heater or car air conditioning performance

If you notice any of these symptoms, your radiator or heater could be clogged or corroded. Any one of these signs can also indicate a worn or leaking radiator or hoses. It is important to get your vehicle to an ASE Certified Technician at your local tire store right away. Prolonged overheating can severely damage cooling system components and even your engine, resulting in some very expensive repair bills.

Tire Stores Perform Flush and Fill and Regular Maintenance

By regularly checking fluid levels, belts and hoses yourself and bringing your vehicle in once a year for a car coolant system maintenance check, you'll be much more likely to avoid these problems and enjoy trouble-free driving. Most cooling system repairs require the help of a trained professional. Have your system checked by a qualified ASE Certified Technician at least once a year, or every 12,000 miles, at one of your friendly neighborhood tire stores.

If you are not experiencing any of the above problems, it is a good idea to check your owner manual for the recommended cooling system service interval. To help avoid corrosion and clogs, most OEMs recommend having the coolant flushed and changed every 40,000 - 50,000 miles. Keep in mind that most car coolants are toxic and also pick up heavy-metal contamination during use. Reputable service centers and tire discount stores know how to dispose of it safely.

Time for Spring Vehicle Maintenance

It´s that time of year again, spring. Your vehicle is ready to be treated well after a long, hard winter and you will need to make sure that a full spring maintenance is done to keep your car or truck in perfect operating order. Let´s take a look at some of the most important factors in the spring maintenance.

Exterior Spring Maintenance

Wiper blades. These are an important part of vehicle maintenance. You´ll want to replace old blades or clean newer ones that have gone through the rigors of winter. Wiper blades should be replaced every six months anyway, so doing it during your spring clean up is perfect timing.

Washing. The salt that is used to melt ice on roads can be very damaging to your car, so now that spring is here, give it a thorough washing from top to bottom. Make sure you rinse the undercarriage as well, since this is where a lot of rust happens without you noticing.

Waxing. This is the perfect time to wax your vehicle so it will last for a while and be easier to clean next time. You should also repair any chips in the paint at this time.

Tires. Check your tire pressure and top up if needed. Keeping your tires at optimum pressure will save you hundreds of dollars in gas and tire wear, so this should be a regular thing, not just for spring maintenance.

Engine Maintenance

Oil. You should change your oil every 3 to 4 months, so an easy way to remember that is to simply change with the change of seasons. Your spring vehicle maintenance is the ideal time to do this.

Tune up. Get a tune up now, to make sure that your vehicle is in great condition for summer driving, when most longer trips are taken. This will allow you to travel safely to weddings or on vacation.

Fluid levels. A quick check of all fluid levels is a good idea at this point, too. Make sure everything is topped up so your engine will be running at top efficiency and you won´t have to deal with problems in this area later on.

Other Vehicle Maintenance

Interior. Now that the weather is warmer, you´ll be able to get out the vacuum and get rid of the clutter and garbage that built up over the winter! Clean out your car´s interior and vacuum for a nicer driving atmosphere.

Brakes. A break check should be done every spring to ensure that they are in perfect working order. You may not even realize that your brakes aren't working properly, since we tend to get used to them as time goes on. This can end up being very dangerous, so get them checked before you head into spring.

Other systems. Your spring maintenance checkup is a good time to review all other areas of your vehicle, replace broken lights and repair any other problems that you have been leaving until warmer weather.

A spring vehicle maintenance is the ideal way to ensure that your vehicle is ready to drive and is safe to do so for the spring and summer months. This includes checking out the main systems, fixing up your car and removing the winter salt and grime that can be damaging, as well as replacing parts like the windshield wipers for better visibility. It´s an important part of car upkeep. You should also do a winter maintenance session to ensure that your vehicle is ready for winter, six months or so from now.

Visit an Auto Repair Shop for a Tune Up If You Want to Prevent Expensive Damage to Your Vehicle!

They provide preventative maintenance and they will ensure that your vehicle stays in great condition for many years. Most vehicles require tune ups every 30,000 miles or 2 years. However, some new vehicles don't require tune ups until they reach 100,000 miles. If you want to find out for sure, check with your manufacturer. Not getting regular tune ups can result in lower gas mileage and damage your engine. Read these tips if you own a vehicle.

Fuel Filter

One should include replacing the fuel filter. If your fuel filter is plugged, the fuel will not reach your cylinders. If you replace the fuel filter, you will extend the life of your fuel pump and improve fuel economy.

Spark Plugs

They also include replacing the spark plugs. If your spark plugs are damaged, your vehicle may not run effectively on its cylinders. Spark plug wires also need to be checked and replaced when necessary.

Fluid Levels

Tune ups should include checking the fluid levels and topping them off when necessary. This is important to the life of your vehicle. When you take your car to an auto repair shop for a tune up, the mechanic will check your oil level, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, windshield washer fluid, coolant, and brake fluid.

Battery

The battery is your vehicle's source of power. When you get a tune up, your auto repair mechanic will test your battery, and check the terminals and connectors. He can also make sure your battery will function properly in freezing weather.

PCV Valve

Your PCV valve should be checked when you get one. If your PCV valve is damaged, your vehicle may stall when you're out driving.

Oil Change

Your oil needs to be changed about every 3,000 miles or according to your manufacturer's instructions. Motor oil keeps the engine's parts from rubbing against each other and it keeps the engine clean. Engine oil also prevents cars from overheating. If you don't change your oil periodically, you will cause many expensive problems in the future. When you get your oil changed, you should also replace your oil filter.

Belts

Your tune up should also include checking the belts. Remember that if your belts break when you drive, it will cause expensive damage.

Lights

The process should also include checking the lights and making sure they work. This includes taillights, headlights, turn signals, and license plate lights.

Tires

Tune ups should also include checking the tires. A mechanic will make sure you have the recommended air pressure in your tires. He will also make sure your tires are not worn out. Uneven tire wear will increase your chances of a blow-out and decrease the life of your tires.

When you get one, your auto repair mechanic will inspect your vehicle and replace parts when necessary. By replacing the parts, you'll increase your gas mileage and prevent stalling, roadside breakdowns, rough idling, and difficulty starting the engine. If you want to extend the life of your car and maintain its performance, make sure you don't skip your next tune up.
